A Performance Athletics Team will be established for 2011-2012 following completion of the 400m track based at Whitehall Playing Fields also known as "Packers". Completion of the floodlit track is expected by the end of 2010 when Bristol's only existing athletics track, at Whitchurch Sports Centre, will close.
The track, which was designed and is being built by Abingdon-based company A P Thompson, will consist of six lanes, increasing to eight lanes along the two straight sides of the track.
The company has been working closely with a number of organisations to ensure the track is of a high standard and will enhance the long-term development of athletics in the city.
These include Bristol City Council, which is financing the scheme, The City Academy, athletics clubs including the city's largest club, Bristol & West Athletics Club, and governing bodies Athletics England and UK Athletics.
It will be used by schools across the city during the day and by the community and athletics clubs at evenings and weekends.
A Performance Athletics Team is an exciting new prospect in the lead up to London 2012 and it is hoped that the programme will support many talented athletes.
